It’s going to be Christmas soon and I’m sure many of us still have more shopping to do. Knowing my son’s fascination with toy robots, I have been researching for toy robots he’ll be interested in that will also be educational for him. A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog on toy robots under $50 for those under budget constraint. Therefore, this is a list of toys under $200 that I wish I could get for him.
Cozmo by Anki
The first on the list which also made it into Amazon Holiday Toy List 2017 is none other than Cozmo by Anki. For $179.99, you will get an adorable little companion for your child. Cozmo is a supercomputer with artificial intelligence. He can express hundreds of emotions and best of all, he evolves as you spend more time together. He knows your name, face and personality. Integrated with A.I. he has a curious personality too. He explores, learns and evolves. You can even program new interactions by using Cozmo Software Developers Kit (SDK).
Cozmo isn’t just a robot, he is a game-playing machine. He lifts Power Cubes and challenges you to games like Quick Tap and Keepaway. Since he is always evolving, his skills and games are constantly updating.
So, if budget isn’t a big deal, I would definitely get Cozmo. Not only is he one amazing supercute, supersmart robot, he reminds me of the adorable Wall-E too. Get Cozmo here.
Wonder Workshop Dash Robot
The next robot won a few awards like 2015 National Parenting Gold, Time to Play Magazine 2015 Holiday Most Wanted List, Opening Minds Innovation for Schools, ISTE Best of Show for Schools, etc. Introducing Dash by Wonder Workshop. At a glance, Dash looks like a one-eye octopus.
In truth, Dash is a toy robot that makes coding fun for just $134.66. Suitable for children ages 6 and above, Dash can be brought to life with 5 free mobile apps for Apple, Android and Kindle Fire devices. Use your Apple or Android smartphone or tablet to program Dash to move, dance, light up, make sounds, avoid obstacles, etc. Dash comes with hundreds of exciting coding adventures and projects available in Wonder and Blockly apps. Because of this, Dash also helps your child develop patience and build problem solving skills.
Dash comes with USB charging cable and two Building Brick Connectors to extend play with LEGO® and LEGO® Technic compatible bricks. To date, he is used in over 10,000 schools and expanding rapidly.
Also, while having Dash is great enough, you may want to add more exciting fun time (at a higher price) by getting Dot too in Dash and Dot Wonder Pack.
LEGO Boost Creative Toolbox 17101 Building and Coding Kit (847 Pieces)
Next on the list is a brand my son loves — Lego! Therefore, I’m sure he would love this Lego Boost Creative Toolbox which is a 5-in-1 robot kit for kids. Yes, when you buy this kit, you get Vernie the Robot (a robot that dances, tells jokes and even passes gas) which is over 27cm; Frankie the Cat (a pet cat that plays and purrs minus the scratching); Guitar 4000 (a musical instrument with sound effects); M.T.R. 4 (a versatile rover) and Auto Builder (an automated Lego production line).
Using the free app on a tablet, children can code behaviors into whatever they build! They can build and code interactive, motorized robots, models and creations with distance, color and tilt sensor technologies. The downside of this kit is that it currently only works with certain tablet devices. Please check out the device guide page with the list of compatible devices: https://www.lego.com/en-us/service/device-guide/boost.
For less than $160, get this versatile robot kit here.
UBTECH – Jimu Robot – Astrobot Kit Interactive Robotic Building Block (397 Pieces)
Another toy robot that reminds me of Wall-E and Johnny 5 from Short Circuit is a Jimu Robot named Astrobot by UBTECH. Priced at $200, Astrobot is another coding robot not to be left out this Christmas. It can be bought here.
So, what is so special about Jimu Robot? Jimu Robot is the only Robotic Building System that anyone can easily BUILD into specific models or own creations, PROGRAM and CODE (drag-and-drop method) to move with any smart device, and GET SMARTER with STEM skills. Jimu Robot engages kids with REAL ROBOTICS, utilizing real robotic servo motors and real robotic for real robotic programming and coding. Jimu Robot allows you to create from very simple to very complex sequences. With the PRP (pose, record, playback) system, simply hit the record button and move your robot into position for each step of the desired movement. Then stop recording and start again for the next step, until you have your completed action. Then name and save your new action to add to your collection of moves. It’s that easy.
Best of all, you learn coding as you play!
Fisher-Price Think & Learn Teach ‘n Tag Movi
There are so many toy robots out there that my head spins just from researching this list. While the other toys are more suitable for older children, the next one is more appropriate for 3 to 5-year-olds. It is Fisher-Price Think & Learn Teach ‘n Tag Movi.

What’s not to love about this interactive learning robot?
My child will definitely have a blast with Movi! If you agree, get this adorable cool little Movi here for $49.99.

WowWee COJI the Coding Robot Toy
Coding is getting to be an important part of our lives and it’s important to start learning from young. With Coji, children can learn basic coding the easy way via emojis. Control Coji by stringing together emojis, arrows and images to have a set of commands.
Coji also challenges kids with different skill-testing games that encourage critical thinking. For example, in one game, your child will use emoji code to safely direct Coji’s digital avatar through a maze by avoiding obstacles along the way.
While it is necessary to program Coji via a smart device (have to check compatibility), your child can also interact directly with Coji. This adorable robot reacts to physical stimulation such as tilting and shaking. ‘LOL’ as Coji steals your ‘heart’ with pre-programmed responses.
